Direct, Business Development - IT & Engineering Staffing
Job Description
Director of Business Development (Technology/Engineering Staffing)
ROLE OVERVIEW
Our client is expanding its Technology/Engineering staffing business and is hiring a hands-on, player/coach business development leader. This is not a “strategy-only” leadership role—you will be expected to run your own desk (approximately 80% producing) while mentoring and leading 1–3 BDMs (approximately 20% managing). You’ll step into an established sales operating system (KPIs, tools/tech, pipeline expectations, and client strategy are already in place), so the focus is execution: winning new business, driving job orders, and producing placements.
WHAT YOU’LL DO (PLAYER/COACH RESPONSIBILITIES)
Individual Production (Primary – ~80%)
-
Win new direct client relationships for direct Technology/Engineering staffing services
-
Drive and close job orders; build a strong, repeatable pipeline
-
Sell contract staffing and/or a mix of contract + direct hire solutions
-
Confidently handle contract staffing economics: bill/pay rates, markup/gross margin math, and negotiations
-
Conduct client meetings/visits (and be hands-on in the field with accounts)
Team Leadership (Secondary – ~20%)
-
Coach/mentor 1–3 BDMs
-
Join client visits with your direct reports as needed; help move deals forward
-
Hold the team accountable to established KPIs and activity expectations (no need to reinvent the system)
-
Run 1:1s, goal setting, and execution planning; reinforce sales cadence and discipline
CLIENT + ROLE FOCUS
-
Core focus: Technology/Engineering staffing (Front End, Back End, DevOps, Cloud, Analysts, etc.)
-
Secondary/adjacent experience that can be a plus: Manufacturing
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR (MUST-HAVES)
-
Proven success in staffing agency business development with contract staffing) OR a strong blend of contract + direct hire in the IT or Engineering space
-
Track record of winning direct-to-client business (MSP/VMS exposure is helpful, but direct relationships are the priority)
-
Comfort being “boots on the ground”: sourcing/creating new client relationships, client visits, and closing deals
-
Desire and ability to lead a small team while maintaining a personal production desk
COMPENSATION
Base salary range: $110k-$120k + Incentives/commission: performance-based
